Laurent Commission : And after?
Among other things, we wanted to know what they get out of being host families. What motivates them to continue making room in their families for these little ones who have been dealt a rough hand by life? The second question is one we often hear from the general public, and we wanted to know what foster families think about it: do you do it for the money?
Curious to know what the foster families answered? We've included links to the videos at the bottom of this text.
But first, a quick reminder about the essential role of foster families in our society. As the African proverb says, it takes a village to raise a child. At one time or another, all parents need a helping hand from their extended family, neighbors, friends, community, school, daycare, or community organizations. But sometimes that's not enough. When biological parents can no longer cope, the DPJ comes to their aid, particularly with foster families.
Over the past 20 years, reports to the DPJ have increased significantly. And 2024-2025 is no exception, with 6,686 more reports than the previous year. The reports that are accepted are those in which a child's safety or development is compromised, whether through some form of abuse, abandonment, neglect, physical, sexual, or psychological abuse, the presence of certain behavioral disorders, or because they are exposed to domestic violence.
In this context, these children need foster families who will open their homes and hearts to them, providing them with love, a safe living environment, stability, and basic care (three meals a day, washing, a roof over their heads, a safe place to sleep, healthcare, parental presence, schooling, etc.) as well as the support they need to regain confidence, security, and a promising future.
These children arrive with heavy baggage. They have significant needs. And that's where the family environment offered by a foster family can make a huge difference in these children's lives.
Now, let's watch some videos that will help you understand the importance of the life mission that foster families have chosen to take on.
